How We Do It

These are pictures of a King 600 Student trumpet before an overhaul. This poor thing had been out on a rental many times and needed a good trip to the old Stemple Music Spa for battle-hardened instruments.

  1. The first thing we do is strip off the old lacquer and begin dent removal. It takes many years of practice and lots of elbow grease to make these things disappear without damaging the horn.
  2. Here is one brief moment of many hours spent in the buffing room removing scratches, tool marks, kids nicknames and various other ugly seemingly permanent marks on the bell. This gets done with every inch and spot of the instrument.
  3. After a rough-buff, the horn is carefully soldered back together, cleaned up and buffed again with a less abrasive wheel and compound to make it shine like a mirror. It then gets a coat of baked-on epoxy lacquer that normally lasts longer than that of the manufacturer.
